Rivers United have continued their squad strengthening ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with the signing of experienced goalkeeper Zalli Abdullahi from Katsina United.
The Port Harcourt-based club confirmed the arrival of the shot-stopper via their official social media channels, welcoming him as another key addition to a squad targeting domestic and continental success.
“HERE WE GO! We have our man, Zalli Abdullahi. The experienced goalkeeper joins us from Katsina United FC and is ready to bring his quality between the posts for the Pride of Rivers. Welcome to Rivers United FC, Zalli! #NPFL27,” the club announced.
Abdullahi arrives with valuable NPFL experience and is expected to compete for the club’s number one jersey as Rivers United prepare for another demanding campaign.
His signing is the latest in an ambitious recruitment drive by the former league champions, who have already strengthened several areas of the squad with the arrivals of midfielder Blessed Iyamu and defender Mohammed Mukhtar. The club is determined to build on last season’s runners-up finish and mount another serious challenge for the league title.
Since winning their maiden NPFL crown in the 2021/22 season, Rivers United have established themselves as one of Nigeria’s most consistent clubs, regularly competing at the top end of the table while representing the country in CAF inter-club competitions.
Adding an experienced goalkeeper is viewed as a crucial step in reinforcing the team’s defensive stability ahead of what promises to be another competitive season.
Although the financial details and contract length have not been disclosed, the move reflects Rivers United’s strategy of blending experienced domestic performers with quality additions capable of making an immediate impact.
Supporters have welcomed Abdullahi’s arrival with optimism, hoping his experience, leadership, and shot-stopping ability will strengthen the Pride of Rivers as they pursue silverware in the 2026/27 campaign.
