Nigeria could be set to welcome another promising midfield talent into the Super Eagles setup, with Hull City midfielder Tim Iroegbunam reportedly awaiting FIFA approval to complete his international allegiance switch from England.
The 23-year-old, who was born in Birmingham to Nigerian parents, has taken significant steps towards representing the country of his heritage after reportedly obtaining a Nigerian passport and submitting the necessary documentation to FIFA for clearance.

According to reports, Iroegbunam is keen to wear Nigeria’s famous green-and-white colours following discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is actively exploring options to strengthen his squad with players of Nigerian descent.
Although the midfielder has previously represented England at youth level, featuring for the U19 and U20 teams, he remains uncapped at senior international level. His involvement with England’s U19 side included being part of the team that won the European Championship in 2022.
That history does not necessarily prevent him from representing Nigeria, but FIFA must formally approve his change of association before he can feature in competitive international matches for the Super Eagles.
The administrative process, however, means Nigeria may have to wait a little longer before benefiting from his services. Iroegbunam is reportedly expected to miss the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Tanzania later this month, with FIFA’s approval potentially arriving towards the end of the year or in early 2027.
For Chelle, securing the midfielder’s services could provide an important addition to Nigeria’s options in the middle of the park. Iroegbunam offers a combination of physical strength, energy, mobility and experience in English football, qualities that could prove valuable as the coach continues to shape his squad.
The midfielder’s club career has also continued to develop. He joined Hull City permanently from Everton in September 2026, signing a five-year contract after previously featuring in the Premier League for both Aston Villa and Everton.
His move to the Tigers has provided another opportunity to establish himself as a regular contributor, and he recently celebrated his first top-flight goal for the club in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town.
At 23, Iroegbunam is entering an important stage of his career, and the prospect of representing Nigeria could open a new chapter in his football journey. With discussions reportedly held with Chelle and the necessary paperwork submitted, attention has now shifted to FIFA’s final decision.
For Nigerian supporters, the possibility of adding another England-developed player to the Super Eagles midfield is an exciting prospect. However, until FIFA grants the required clearance, Iroegbunam’s international future remains officially unresolved.
Should the approval arrive as expected, Nigeria could have another valuable midfield option available for future AFCON assignments and the country’s wider international ambitions.
