Liverpool are preparing for a new era in defence following the departure of French centre-back Ibrahima Konaté, who has completed a move to Real Madrid after leaving Anfield at the expiration of his contract.
The 27-year-old defender brought an end to a successful five-year spell on Merseyside, having made 183 appearances and played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League triumph during the 2025 season.
With a sizeable gap now left in the heart of the defence, newly appointed head coach Andoni Iraola is reportedly taking a patient approach before entering the transfer market.
Nigerian-Eligible Defenders Among Top Prospects
Rather than immediately signing an experienced replacement, Iraola is expected to use pre-season to assess several highly rated academy and youth defenders already within the club’s ranks.
Among the six defenders reportedly under consideration are three players eligible to represent Nigeria at the senior international level.
Wellington Lucky (Wellity Lucky)

Leading the group is Wellity Lucky, the Spanish-born centre-back who has already committed his international future to Nigeria.
The 20-year-old joined Liverpool from Real Zaragoza and has developed into a regular for the club’s U21 side. Known for his composure on the ball, strength in duels, and leadership qualities, Lucky has already been included in several senior matchday squads.
Many observers view him as the closest of the young defenders to making the breakthrough into Liverpool’s first team.
Noah Adekoya

Another player attracting attention is Noah Adekoya, a 19-year-old centre-back who arrived from Burnley earlier this year.
Standing around 1.93 metres tall, Adekoya combines physical presence with impressive technical ability. Despite dealing with some fitness setbacks, he has earned praise for his pace, ball progression, and comfort in possession.
With no senior international allegiance yet declared, Nigeria remains a potential destination for the highly regarded defender.
Ifeanyi Ndukwe

Completing the Nigerian-linked trio is Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who will officially join Liverpool after agreeing to a move from Austria Vienna.
At 1.98 metres tall, Ndukwe is one of the most physically imposing young defenders in Europe. The Austrian youth international has already gained senior football experience and is widely regarded as a player with enormous long-term potential.
Although he has represented Austria at youth level, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria through his family background.
Iraola’s Youth-Focused Vision
Liverpool’s decision to evaluate internal options reflects the club’s long-standing commitment to youth development.

Iraola is expected to closely monitor the performances of Lucky, Adekoya, and Ndukwe, as well as other prospects including Mor Talla Ndiaye and Jeremy Jacquet during pre-season.
Strong performances could earn one or more of the youngsters opportunities in domestic cup competitions or even Premier League fixtures next season.
Opportunity for Nigeria
For Nigerian football, the situation presents an intriguing opportunity.
With Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle actively monitoring dual-national talents across Europe, the emergence of three Nigerian-eligible defenders at one of England’s biggest clubs could significantly strengthen Nigeria’s long-term defensive options.
As Liverpool begin life after Konaté, all eyes will be on pre-season to see whether one of these promising young defenders can seize the opportunity and establish themselves at the highest level.
