Werder Bremen have reaffirmed their faith in Nigerian defender Felix Agu, with the Bundesliga club expressing their willingness to hand the Super Eagles star a new contract despite his frustrating injury-hit campaign.
Agu endured a difficult 2025/26 season after a series of fitness setbacks severely disrupted his progress at the Weserstadion.
The 26-year-old fullback spent nearly four months on the sidelines following an ankle injury suffered in October, before further muscular problems limited his involvement toward the closing stages of the campaign.
The recurring setbacks restricted Agu to just eleven Bundesliga appearances as Bremen battled through the season and ultimately secured their top-flight status.
With his playing time significantly reduced and questions emerging over his long-term future, speculation had grown around whether the German club would consider parting ways with the Nigerian international. However, Bremen’s management has now moved to calm those concerns.
Speaking to DeichStube, Bremen’s head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, confirmed the club remains open to extending Agu’s stay beyond his current contract, which runs until 2027.
“There haven’t been any further talks so far, but we are generally open to a contract extension,” Niemeyer stated.
Although no fresh negotiations have been scheduled, reports suggest both parties remain willing to revisit discussions during the summer transfer window.
Previous talks are believed to have taken place earlier in the winter before being temporarily paused.
Despite his injury struggles, Agu continues to be highly valued within the squad due to his versatility, defensive awareness, and ability to operate effectively across multiple positions on the flank.
When fully fit, the Nigerian has proven to be an important asset for Bremen with his pace, work rate, and attacking support from wide areas.
The coming months could now prove crucial for Agu as he looks to put his injury problems behind him and re-establish himself as a regular starter ahead of the new Bundesliga season.
For both player and club, a successful return to full fitness may not only revive contract discussions but also strengthen Agu’s standing within the Super Eagles setup as Nigeria prepares for important international fixtures in the months ahead.
