3 Min Read

Maduka Okoye delivered a spirited performance for Udinese Calcio, but the Nigerian shot-stopper could not prevent his side from suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to US Cremonese in a tense Serie A clash.

The defeat marked Udinese’s 15th league loss of the campaign and dealt a blow to their hopes of securing a top-10 finish for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Cremonese, fighting desperately to preserve their Serie A status, made a dream start at the Bluenergy Stadium. Former Leicester City F.C. striker Jamie Vardy struck inside the opening 10 minutes after reacting quickest to a rebound.

Okoye had produced an initial save to deny the veteran forward, but Vardy was perfectly positioned to convert at the second attempt.

Udinese believed they had been handed a route back into the contest midway through the first half when the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned, much to the frustration of the home supporters.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Udinese dominating possession and searching for an equaliser, but Cremonese’s disciplined defensive structure proved difficult to break down.

There was further drama when defender Hassane Kamara was initially shown a red card, only for VAR intervention to reduce the punishment to a yellow card after review.

Despite the defeat, Okoye remained one of Udinese’s standout performers. The Nigerian international made three important saves and showed composure in possession, completing all of his attempted passes during the encounter.

He also registered three recoveries and earned a respectable 6.8 match rating on SofaScore.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed an impressive end to the season, having recently been nominated for Serie A Player of the Month and crowned Udinese’s Player of the Month following a string of commanding performances between the sticks.

Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian Kingsley Ehizibue was unavailable for selection after serving a suspension triggered by his fifth booking of the campaign in Udinese’s previous victory over Cagliari.

Udinese will now turn their attention to a difficult final-day encounter against S.S.C. Napoli at the iconic Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, where they will hope to finish the season on a positive note despite this disappointing setback.
