FC Porto have been crowned champions of the Primeira Liga for the 2025/26 season after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over FC Alverca on Saturday night.
The win, sealed in front of a passionate home crowd at Estádio do Dragão, secured Porto’s 31st league title and ended a four-year wait since their last triumph in the 2021/22 campaign.
Nigerian Stars Shine in Title Triumph
Two Super Eagles players were central to Porto’s success: Zaidu Sanusi and Terem Moffi.
Sanusi, a consistent figure at left-back, claimed his second league title with the club, while Moffi, who joined on loan from OGC Nice in January, celebrated the first major trophy of his senior career.
Bednarek Header Seals Historic Win
The decisive moment came in the 40th minute when Jan Bednarek rose highest to head home a corner delivered by Gabri Veiga.
Porto’s disciplined defence, which conceded just 15 goals throughout the season, held firm to protect their lead. The result moved them to 85 points, placing them beyond the reach of rivals SL Benfica and Sporting CP with two matches still to play.
Tactical Discipline Under Farioli
Under the guidance of head coach Francesco Farioli, Porto delivered a campaign defined by structure, efficiency, and consistency. Captain Diogo Costa also paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota by wearing a commemorative jersey during the title-clinching match.
Nigerian Impact Celebrated
For Sanusi and Moffi, the triumph represents more than silverware; it highlights the growing influence of Nigerian players in European football. Sanusi’s defensive reliability and Moffi’s attacking contributions, particularly during the crucial final stretch, played a key role in securing the title.
Return to Domestic Dominance
This title marks a significant milestone for Porto, reinforcing their status as one of Portugal’s most successful clubs. With a strong goal difference and consistent performances across the campaign, their dominance was clear.
As celebrations unfolded at the Dragão, one thing stood out: Sanusi and Moffi have not only helped deliver silverware but have also strengthened Nigeria’s presence on the European stage.
