In an official statement released on Wednesday, the team confirmed:
“Calvin Bassey has withdrawn from the Nigeria national football team squad for the upcoming friendlies against Iran and Jordan due to a back injury.”

The decision leaves the squad with 21 players in camp in Antalya, following the arrival of captain Wilfred Ndidi, who completed the roster earlier on Wednesday.

Key Absence for Club and Country

Bassey’s absence represents a significant blow for the Super Eagles, given his importance at both the club and international levels.

The defender has been a standout performer for Fulham this season, starting 21 of their 23 Premier League matches as the London side pushes for a European qualification spot.

Since cementing his place in the national team, Bassey has become a first-choice center-back, playing a crucial role in Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2024 AFCON and rarely missing matches in recent years.

Defensive Reshuffle Expected

With Bassey unavailable, Chelle is expected to adjust his defensive setup, potentially turning to options such as Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, or Bruno Onyemaechi to fill the gap.

The Super Eagles continued training on Wednesday without the Fulham defender, as the rest of the squad, including new arrivals, focused on preparations for the upcoming fixtures.

Focus Turns to Recovery and World Cup Build-Up

Team officials are currently monitoring Bassey’s recovery in coordination with Fulham’s medical staff, although no timeline has been set for his return.

For the defender, attention now shifts to rehabilitation ahead of Fulham’s crucial run-in, while Nigeria will be hoping for his swift recovery with the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers approaching later this year.

Crucial Period for Super Eagles

Despite the setback, the friendlies remain a key opportunity for Chelle to assess his squad, refine tactical setups, and build cohesion ahead of more demanding competitive fixtures.
