Trabzonspor’s young Nigerian centre-back Chibuike Nwaiwu delivered a career-defining performance on Friday, scoring twice in the space of three second-half minutes to inspire a 3–1 victory over Fatih Karagumruk S.K. at Papara Park.
The result keeps Trabzonspor firmly in third place in the Turkish Süper Lig and strengthens their position in the title race.
Second-Half Explosion
The 22-year-old defender, who had not scored since joining the Black Sea club, broke his duck in the 47th minute. From a corner routine, Tufan redirected the ball across the face of the goal, and Nwaiwu reacted quickest, powering home a close-range header to restore the hosts’ lead after Daniele Verde had earlier equalized in the 28th minute.
Three minutes later, lightning struck again.
Another well-delivered set piece saw Paul Onuachu win the initial aerial duel, and Nwaiwu timed his run to perfection, guiding a composed header beyond the goalkeeper for his second goal of the afternoon. The rapid-fire double transformed what had been a competitive contest into a controlled 3–1 advantage.
Aerial Authority
Throughout the match, the former Enyimba F.C. defender demonstrated authority in both defensive and attacking phases. His positional awareness, physical strength, and timing in the air underlined why he has become a key component of Trabzonspor’s backline this season.
While goalkeeper André Onana produced important saves to preserve the advantage, it was Nwaiwu’s decisive contributions in front of goal that defined the fixture.
Injury Concern, Lasting Impact
Nwaiwu was substituted in the 73rd minute after picking up a knock, but by then his imprint on the game was indelible. For a centre-back whose primary mandate is defensive solidity and organizational discipline, a brace in under four minutes represents a rare and memorable achievement.
The victory not only consolidates Trabzonspor’s league ambitions but also highlights the growing influence of Nigerian talent in the Süper Lig. For Nwaiwu, this performance may well be remembered as a breakout moment, proof that he can dominate both boxes when it matters most.
