Former Nigeria international Garba Lawal has come out strongly in defence of Super Eagles left-back Zaidu Sanusi following widespread criticism after Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite the win, Sanusi emerged as Nigeria’s lowest-rated player according to SofaScore, earning a 6.2 rating in a match where Alex Iwobi starred with two assists, Semi Ajayi scored the opening goal, and Ademola Lookman netted the winner.

The performance sparked intense debate among fans, many of whom questioned head coach Eric Chelle’s decision to start the Porto defender.

Statistically, it was a challenging outing for the 27-year-old. Sanusi lost possession 14 times and struggled to make an attacking impact down the left flank, with several crosses failing to trouble Tanzania’s defence.

However, his display also included solid contributions: an 83 percent pass completion rate, one tackle, three clearances, two recoveries, and three ground duels won over the full 90 minutes.

Nevertheless, social media criticism was relentless, with some supporters calling for Olympiakos defender Bruno Onyemaechi to replace him. Others even blamed Sanusi for Tanzania’s equaliser a claim Garba Lawal firmly rejected.

Speaking to Footy Africa, Lawal questioned why Sanusi had been singled out.

“Why are they criticising him? Is he the only player on the pitch, or was he solely responsible for the equaliser?” Lawal asked. “Football is a team game.

The fans are not the coach only Eric Chelle knows why he selected him.”Lawal also pointed to Sanusi’s pedigree, reminding critics of his club career in Europe.

“If he’s not good enough, why has he been playing for FC Porto for almost five seasons? The coach trusts him because of his quality.

He can run, tackle, defend, and support the attack. The boy deserves respect.

He’s playing for his country.”Lawal’s comments reflect the apparent stance of head coach Eric Chelle, who is known for sticking with winning teams.

With Nigeria securing three points against Tanzania, the Malian tactician is unlikely to make drastic changes ahead of the Super Eagles’ next Group C clash against Tunisia.

Sanusi’s selection also highlights Chelle’s belief in the defender’s physical strength, experience, and tactical discipline qualities that may not always stand out statistically but are vital to the team’s structure.

The Porto defender was Nigeria’s first-choice left-back during their impressive run to the AFCON final last year, starting several key matches and providing balance to a side built on pace and transitions.

That trust appears to remain intact.Nigeria will face Tunisia on Saturday with knockout qualification at stake.
