Club Brugge have officially confirmed that Raphael Onyedika will be available for the 2025 AFCON, announcing the news on their website on Monday. This will be Onyedika’s second major tournament with the Super Eagles after featuring at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where Nigeria finished as runners-up.

Back then, his involvement was limited to just a 27-minute cameo in the group stage win over Guinea-Bissau, but this time around, things are different. Onyedika has been in outstanding form for Club Brugge, turning himself into one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in Europe.

Onyedika Set for Bigger AFCON Role

Since making his debut in September 2022, Onyedika has earned 17 caps and scored once for the national team. This season alone, he has made 22 appearances for Club Brugge across all competitions, including three in the UEFA Champions League, contributing two goals and an assist.

His club form has made him a strong contender for a bigger role in Coach Chelle’s midfield, although competition remains fierce. Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka have often been preferred options, meaning Onyedika will need to battle for a spot in the starting XI.

Squad Selection Almost Done

Chelle’s final 28-man list is expected to include a solid core of experienced names as Nigeria looks to bounce back from missing out on the last World Cup.

There’s also some drama in the goalkeeping department. Stanley Nwabali is currently a major injury doubt, which could open the door for Maduka Okoye, now at Udinese, to reclaim the number one shirt.

AFCON Countdown

The 2025 AFCON begins on December 21. Nigeria will kick off their Group D campaign against Tanzania on December 23, before taking on Tunisia and Uganda.

With Onyedika cleared and in form, the Super Eagles may just have an extra midfield weapon ready to make a difference this time around.
