Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have turned their attention to Wednesday’s high-stakes WAFU B U-20 Championship semi-final against hosts Ivory Coast, following a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their final group match on Sunday.
Despite securing an early spot in the knockout stage with victories over Ghana and Togo, Nigeria needed a draw against Burkina Faso to claim top spot in the group and avoid the host nation. The defeat leaves the seven-time U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions facing a tougher route to qualification, while group winners Burkina Faso set up a semi-final clash against Niger.
With only the two semi-final winners securing berths at the 2027 U-20 AFCON in Ghana—which doubles as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan—the stakes remain high for head coach Abdul Maikaba’s side.
Maikaba expressed complete confidence in his team’s ability to bounce back from the setback.
“Football is about learning, responding, and showing character in difficult moments,” Maikaba said on Monday. “We will learn from this setback, stay united, and shift our full focus to the semi-final against hosts Ivory Coast. Our belief remains strong, our spirit unbroken, and our mission unchanged.”
Maikaba, recently appointed to lead the Flying Eagles, aims to write the next chapter in Nigeria’s storied U-20 history by securing both continental qualification and a ticket to the global stage next year.
