Ibrahim Gusau has stepped down as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), bringing his four-year tenure to an end with his resignation coming just weeks before the federation’s scheduled elective congress.

Gusau confirmed his resignation on Thursday, 27 August, during a world press conference at the NFF headquarters in Abuja.

The NFF president said he arrived at the decision after extensive consultations with his family, friends and key football stakeholders.

According to Gusau, the decision followed growing calls from various stakeholders for a change in the leadership of the federation.

“There was so much clamour from here and there, from all stakeholders, everybody,” he said.

After reflecting on the situation and consulting those close to him, Gusau said he decided to relinquish his position.

“I just want to tell you, I decided to resign my position as President,” he announced.

Gusau also disclosed that he subsequently informed members of his board about his decision and advised them accordingly.

His resignation marks the end of an administration that began in September 2022, when he was elected NFF president after defeating Peterside Idah in the decisive round of the election.

Gusau secured 39 votes against Idah’s one vote to succeed former NFF president Amaju Pinnick.

One of the major achievements recorded during his tenure was the Super Falcons’ triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which saw Nigeria claim a record-extending 10th continental title.

However, Gusau’s departure comes just one month before the NFF’s scheduled elective congress in Lafia, Nasarawa State, where a new leadership is expected to emerge.

The congress is currently scheduled for 27 September.

With Gusau now out of office, attention will turn to the federation’s next steps and the process of determining his successor.

His resignation brings an end to his time at the helm of Nigerian football, while the NFF prepares to enter a new leadership era.
