Nigerian sprint sensation Tobi Amusan delivered another statement performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday, recording the fastest women’s 100m hurdles heat in the history of the competition as she booked her place in the final.
The reigning world record holder stormed to victory in her heat with a blistering 12.19 seconds, aided by a +3.8 m/s tailwind, surpassing every previous heat performance in Commonwealth Games history. South Africa’s Marione Fourie finished second in 12.50 seconds, while Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill crossed the line third in 12.69 seconds.
Competing at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, the 29-year-old Nigerian looked composed from the start, powering clear of the field to underline her status as the overwhelming favourite for the gold medal.
Amusan now stands on the brink of making history. Victory in the final would make her the first athlete ever to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games titles in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The Nigerian star first claimed Commonwealth gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, winning in 12.68 seconds, before successfully defending her crown at Birmingham 2022, where she set a Games record of 12.30 seconds.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest hurdlers in history, Amusan also holds the world record of 12.12 seconds, set in 2022. She has maintained impressive form throughout the 2026 season, recording multiple 12.28-second performances and securing Diamond League victories in Paris and Rabat, before finishing second at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic.
With another Commonwealth title within reach, expectations are high that Amusan can once again deliver for Team Nigeria and add to the nation’s medal tally in Glasgow.
The women’s 100m hurdles final is scheduled to take place at 9:49 p.m. BST on Thursday, where all eyes will be on the Nigerian as she chases another piece of athletics history.
