Portuguese giants FC Porto secured a valuable 2–1 away victory over VfB Stuttgart in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 clash.

Played at the MHPArena in Stuttgart, the encounter delivered plenty of drama as Porto capitalized on a strong first-half performance before holding off a spirited fightback from the Bundesliga side.

The result gives Porto a narrow advantage ahead of the decisive second leg in Portugal.

Moffi Opens the Scoring

The home side started brightly, with Ermedin Demirović testing Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa early in the match.

However, Porto struck first in the 21st minute through Nigerian striker Terem Moffi.

The forward latched onto a clever pass from Borja Sainz before firing a precise right-footed shot past Alexander Nübel, giving the visitors a crucial lead.

Sanusi Assist Sets Up Mora’s Goal

Porto doubled their advantage just six minutes later.

Nigerian left-back Zaidu Sanusi delivered a pinpoint cross from the flank, which was calmly finished by rising star Rodrigo Mora.

The goal underlined Sanusi’s attacking contribution and highlighted the growing impact of African players in European competitions.

Undav Pulls One Back for Stuttgart

Despite falling two goals behind, Stuttgart refused to give up.

The Bundesliga side pulled a goal back in the 40th minute when Deniz Undav reacted quickest in the box, hooking the ball home after a chaotic set-piece situation.

The goal energized the home crowd of more than 50,000 fans, setting up an intense second half.

Porto Hold Firm Under Pressure

After the break, Stuttgart pushed hard for an equalizer.

Both Undav and captain Atakan Karazor came close to leveling the score, but Porto’s defense, marshalled by veteran center-back Pepe, stood firm.

Porto manager Alessandro Farioli praised Moffi’s impact after the game.

“Terem was outstanding tonight; his goal set the tone,” Farioli said.

Undav remained confident Stuttgart could turn things around:

“They are not better than us. We’ll make it right in Porto.”

Second Leg Decider in Portugal

The return leg will take place at the Estádio do Dragão on March 19, where Porto’s formidable home record could prove decisive.

The victory also ended Porto’s three-match winless away run in the Europa League, putting them in a strong position to reach the quarterfinals.

For Stuttgart, defensive lapses in the first half proved costly, but their resilience ensures the tie remains alive heading into the decisive second leg.
