Francis Uzoho has spoken of his pride and excitement after earning a recall to the Super Eagles, describing the opportunity to represent Nigeria as the greatest honour of his career.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who last featured for the national team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, admitted he deeply missed life in camp during his time away from the squad and could not hide his joy at being back among familiar faces.
Speaking to Super Eagles media, Uzoho said the camaraderie within the team was what he missed most.
“I think I missed quite a lot. I miss the boys, to be honest. I miss the vibe in camp because we’ve been together a lot,” he said.
“The most noticeable thing is being around the boys and facing every challenge together.”
Uzoho Maintained Close Ties Despite Absence
Despite his absence from recent squads, Uzoho revealed that he stayed in touch with teammates to maintain strong relationships within the group.
“I speak to them once in a while. We chat and check up on each other. I have colleagues I’m closer to, but in general I do reach out to the boys,” he explained.
The goalkeeper added that receiving the call-up filled him with overwhelming emotion.
“I was filled with joy, one I can’t really express, especially knowing I was coming back to represent Nigeria, which is the most important thing in my career.”
Goalkeeper Defends His Recall
Uzoho also addressed discussions surrounding his inclusion in the squad, insisting that every player called up has earned the trust of the technical crew.
He emphasized that national team selection is based strictly on readiness and merit.
“Everyone called up to the national team is ready. If you aren’t ready, you won’t be called,” he stated.
“The technical scouts and coaching staff know what they are doing. If they call a player, it means he’s ready to represent Nigeria, and that applies to me as well.”
Uzoho concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the national cause.
“If the time comes and the country needs me, I will be ready.”
Strong Bond Within the Goalkeeping Unit
The former Deportivo La Coruña shot-stopper also spoke warmly about the relationship among the Super Eagles’ goalkeepers, describing a supportive and healthy environment.
While he maintains a good bond with Amas Obasogie, Uzoho admitted he is particularly close to current first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
“I was with Amas twice in the national team before I stopped coming. He’s a good lad, and we’re close,” he said.
“Stanley Nwabali is my brother. When he came in, we were all together and helped each other.”
He added:
“We have a very good relationship. People outside may not see it, but personally, I’m good with him and also with Amas.”
Experience Counts
Francis Uzoho has earned 35 senior caps for Nigeria and remains one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the Super Eagles setup as the team prepares for upcoming international assignments.
