The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is ramping up its preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi revealing that the federation is working closely with its technical department to assemble the strongest possible Super Eagles squad for Morocco.

Dr. Sanusi made it clear that the provisional list released by head coach Eric Chelle is only the first step in a larger and more detailed selection process.

According to him, the NFF, the technical committee, and the technical department are all actively involved in scrutinizing the current pool of invited players.

“We usually work hand in hand with the technical team, the technical committee, and the technical department to make sure that we prepare the team very well,” Dr. Sanusi said.

“The first aspect of the preparation is the invitation of players to come. The coach has invited a consortium of players from which he is going to select 28 players that will represent Nigeria at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.”

CAF regulations require Nigeria to submit the final 28-man list at least 10 days before kickoff, with a hefty $10,000 fine awaiting any nation that fails to meet the deadline.

The expanded squad size, up from the traditional 23, gives teams more tactical flexibility, especially with AFCON 2025 taking place in the thick of the European season, where player fitness, form, and injuries can fluctuate.

Nigeria has been drawn into a tricky Group B featuring Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, and expectations are high following the Super Eagles’ run to the final at AFCON 2023.
