Bayelsa Queens FC have secured their place at the top of Group B in the WAFU Zone B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers with a flawless record, capping off their group stage campaign with a dominant 4-1 victory over Sam-Nelly of Benin Republic in Yamoussoukro. The win gives the “Prosperity Girls” a perfect nine points from three matches.
Forward Janet Akekoromowei was the star of the show, scoring a brace in a ruthless display. She was joined on the scoresheet by Shakirat Moshood and Alaba Olabiyi. Having already won their previous two games in a commanding fashion, scoring five goals and conceding just two, Bayelsa Queens came into Saturday’s match with confidence.
Akekoromowei opened the scoring in the 14th minute, and Shakirat Moshood doubled the lead in the 35th. Sam-Nelly pulled one back just before halftime through a goal from Kalu Favour, making it 2-1 at the break. However, Bayelsa Queens quickly reasserted their control in the second half. Alaba Olabiyi found the back of the net in the 55th minute to make it 3-1, and just four minutes later, Akekoromowei sealed her brace to put the game out of reach. Her stellar performance earned her the Player of the Match award.
Despite a good effort from both sides, Bayelsa Queens’ superior quality was evident throughout the 90 minutes.
With their perfect run, Bayelsa Queens now advance to the semi-finals, where they will face USFA of Burkina-Faso on Tuesday, September 2.
