Accra, Ghana – The much-anticipated inaugural West African Football Union (WAFU) Zones A&B U-20 Boys Cup of Nations, initially scheduled to take place in Ghana from June 15–30, 2025, has been postponed indefinitely.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the development in an official statement circulated to participating nations.
Official Statement from GFA
The GFA expressed regret over the postponement, stating:
“ We regret to announce that the WAFU A&B U-20 Boys Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Prampram from June 15–30, 2025, has been postponed. A new date for the tournament will be communicated in due course.”
The statement further urged all participating teams, officials, and stakeholders to remain patient while assuring that the rescheduling aims to ensure optimal conditions for a successful tournament.
The tournament was set to feature 16 national teams from WAFU Zones A and B, serving as a crucial preparatory platform ahead of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
Nigeria’s U-20 coach, Aliyu Zubairu, had previously emphasized the importance of the competition for his team’s World Cup preparations. The Flying Eagles have been in a training camp in Abuja over the past week, and the postponement may disrupt their planned buildup.
While the GFA did not specify the exact reason for the delay, sources suggest logistical and organizational challenges may have contributed to the decision. Further updates regarding revised dates and arrangements are expected from the WAFU Organizing Committee in the coming weeks.
Football federations across West Africa are now adjusting their schedules as they await an official announcement on the new tournament dates. The GFA reiterated its commitment to delivering a highly competitive and memorable tournament once rescheduled.
