In a bold move aimed at rejuvenating one of Nigeria’s most successful women’s football teams, the Delta State Government has officially disbanded the entire management board, technical staff, and playing squad of Delta Queens Football Club.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Delta State Sports Commission through a statement signed by its Public Relations Director, Franka Okonma. According to the statement, the sweeping changes are part of a strategic plan to address the team’s recent poor performances in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).
“This dissolution is necessary to reposition the club for greater efficiency, professionalism, and competitiveness,” the statement read.
Delta Queens, based in Asaba and known for hosting matches at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, has long been a powerhouse in Nigerian women’s football. The club boasts a rich history of domestic success and has consistently produced talent for the national team.
However, the current season saw the team falter significantly on the field, prompting growing dissatisfaction among fans and concern from key stakeholders. Despite the leadership of former head coach Peter Dedevbo, a respected figure in Nigerian football, the team struggled to maintain its form.
As a result, the state government has decided to initiate a complete overhaul of the club’s structure. “A new management board, technical crew, and a fresh set of players will be constituted shortly,” the Sports Commission confirmed.
The statement further assured the public that efforts are underway to rebuild Delta Queens with a renewed sense of purpose and clearly defined goals. The government emphasized its ongoing commitment to sports development in the state, especially in promoting women’s football.
