The Ogun state government has urged the new board of the Nigeria National League – NNL,  to restore confidence back into the second tier football league by ensuring equity and fair play as the 2017 season gets underway this weekend.
Commissioner for Sports, Hon Moruf Afolabi Afuape gave the advice while speaking at the Ogun SWAN Forum organized by the Ogun state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria in Abeokuta.
Afuape said the restoration of confidence through equity and fairplay became necessary when one considers the near crisis that characterized the completion of Group B2 of the league last season.
“Since this league is the link between the premier and the amateur cadres, the National League is not only important, but must be run with transparency and fairplay,” Afuape said.

He said that the Ogun state government, as the owners and financiers of Gateway United, will be happy seeing the club compete in a fair and just league.
He therefore used the opportunity to reiterate the state government’s support for the team and hope the management and the playing staff will reciprocate by doing well in league.
Gateway United are away to newly formed Nnewi United at Rojenny Stadium, Oba, near Onitsha for their opening match of the 2017 NNL season.
