Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has tipped Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco as the three biggest contenders to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Gyan shared his predictions while speaking to CAF Media on the red carpet at the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat, where he presented the prestigious Goal of the Year award.
“Ghana Is Out… We’re Disappointed.” – Gyan
The former Black Stars captain admitted that Ghana’s failure to qualify for AFCON for the first time in 21 years is a bitter pill to swallow.
“We’ve got a lot of giants who are going. Ghana is out; we’re very disappointed, but it’s okay, we’ve qualified for the World Cup,” he said.
Turning his attention to the favorites, Gyan listed three teams he believes are best positioned to lift the trophy.
“Nigeria did well; they were close in the previous editions. Ivory Coast did well… Morocco is also a strong contender.”
“I will say these three countries that I have mentioned: Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco.”
Why Gyan Thinks These Three Are the Ones to Beat
Nigeria
- AFCON 2023 runners-up
- AFCON 2019 third-place finish
- One of the deepest squads in Africa
- Hungry for redemption after missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup
- Drawn in Group C with Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania
Nigeria’s consistency and attacking firepower make them strong title challengers.

Ivory Coast
- Defending champions after their dramatic AFCON 2023 triumph
- Knocked Nigeria out in the final, showcasing immense character
- Eyeing a rare title defence last achieved by Egypt between 2008 and 2010
The Elephants remain one of Africa’s mentally toughest tournament sides.

Morocco
- Hosting AFCON for the first time since 1988
- One of Africa’s strongest and most balanced squads
- Impressive World Cup qualification form
- Backed by home support and high expectations
Morocco will carry both pressure and advantage as hosts.
“African Football Has Grown” Gyan on Rising Level
Gyan, who scored eight goals across four AFCON tournaments, praised the rapid evolution of African football and the growing strength of national teams.
He believes AFCON 2025 could be one of the most competitive editions in modern history.
All Eyes on Morocco 2025
As the countdown to a blockbuster AFCON continues, the major talking points remain:
- Can Nigeria end their 12-year AFCON drought?
- Will Ivory Coast defend their crown?
- Can Morocco win the title on home soil for the first time?
AFCON 2025 promises drama, powerhouses colliding, and a battle for continental supremacy like never before.
