Nigeria’s Flying Eagles’ U-20 AFCON Title Ambition Squashed

2 Min Read

The Flying Eagles‘ hope of clinching the 8th U-20 African Cup of Nations title was surprisingly aborted after losing 0-1 to South Africa in the semi-finals.

The Flying Eagles had exuded dominance inspired by firm and decisive resolve to punish their opponents with fiery attempts from Tahir Maigana, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma.

But South Africa had probably noticed sooner than later Achilles’ heel to cash in on for collective advantage.

The wrong substitution of Ebenezer Harcourt by goalkeeper Yakub paved the way for a devastating end for Nigeria’s team with a 66th-minute header from South Africa’s Tylon Smith, who converted a well-delivered corner from Neo Rapoo into a goal in the second half.

The defeat leaves the Flying Eagles with an option for a bronze to be battled for in the third-place match with the host country, Egypt.

While Nigeria lost 0-1 to South Africa, marking a third straight semi-final exit after losses to Gambia (2023) and Mali (2019), Egypt also fell 0 -1 to Morocco in the second semi-final.

South Africa, which has remained unbeaten since the commencement of the tournament, has advanced to the finals and seems poised to claim the title.

Though hope for the title is lost, the Flying Eagles’ qualification for the 2025 U-20 World Cup is secured and guaranteed.
