Gernot Rohr |
Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, has confirmed he will return to Nigeria next and says top on his agenda is to watch some Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matches as preparation begins for the 2018 CHAN qualifiers.
After ten days of camping and training in London during which period Rohr led the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw against Senegal in an international friendly last Thursday to maintain his unbeaten run since taking over the reins of the Nigeria senior football team, the coach will now brace up for a tight schedule which begins in June.
With the earlier friendly game against Burkina Faso cancelled and with no replacement secured for the team, the Super Eagles were forced to play themselves on Monday in a warm up game that ended 1-1 at the Hive stadium in London. On the importance of London camping, Rohr said: “We planned two international friendlies but could only play one. However, we were still able to do some work.
“We’ve been able to see some new players and young Nigerian talents here in the U.K., that could be part of our group in future. I’ll be back in Lagos next week to watch some NPFL games and see some of our home stars in action as we continue to plan ahead.”
The essence of Rohr’s tour of the NPFL match centres is to identify quality stars that would be drafted in the home based Eagles squad who begin preparations for the 2018 championship in August.
The CHAN qualifiers for the home based Eagles kicks off with an away trip to Togo/Benin on August 10 before the return leg one week later in Nigeria.
