The 2017 season of the South West Premier Rugby Football League organised by Nigeria Rugby Football Federation kicked off saturday at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.

The championship featuring 8 teams drawn from across the geo-political zone of the country, include Police RFC, Racing RFC, Eco RFC, Lagos RFC, Panthers RFC, defending champions Cowrie RFC, Gosar RFC and Dragons RFC.
In some of the Day 1 matches played, Gosar defeated Dragons 17-5, Panthers lost 0-18 to Eco, defending champions Cowrie RFC decimated Lagos RFC 39-0.

Speaking after his team’s victory, captain of Cowrie RFC, Azeez Ladipo, enthused confidently that the championship which is expected to last for six weeks would help to boost the preparations of some of the players invited to feature for the national team, the Black Stallions.

Ladipo who also doubles as the captain of the national team, said the members of the national team would be in a better stead to grab the much needed qualification ticket from the African Bronze Cup, when they confront Algeria and Cameroon, when the qualifiers begin in May.
