The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League enters Matchday 5 on Wednesday with Enyimba desperate to get their campaign moving, while the two Kano clubs, Barau FC and Kano Pillars, continue their impressive starts to the season.
Nine matches are scheduled for Wednesday, with Rivers United hosting Kun Khalifat FC on Thursday to complete the midweek programme.
Enyimba head into their home clash with Sporting Lagos under serious pressure after losing their opening three league matches.
The nine-time Nigerian champions are currently at the bottom of the table and remain the only side yet to collect a point. They have scored just once and conceded five goals in their first three games.
Their latest setback came at the Enyimba Stadium, where Inter Lagos secured a 1-0 victory on Matchday 4.
That result has increased the pressure on Emmanuel Deutsch and his players, who now face another difficult test against Sporting Lagos.
Enyimba’s slow start has also raised concerns because the club have not gone through their opening three league matches without a win since the 2000/01 season. They will be hoping to avoid another unwanted record by finally getting points on the board.
Sporting Lagos will arrive in Aba with their own concerns. The Lagos side defeated Inter Lagos 3-0 earlier in the campaign but suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Abia Warriors in their last outing.
With both teams looking to recover, the meeting in Aba could be one of the most closely watched games of the round.
Barau FC have been one of the surprise early performers this season.
The Kano-based side enter Matchday 5 unbeaten, with eight points from four matches after two wins and two draws. They currently sit second and could move to the top of the table if they defeat Abia Warriors and Doma United drop points against Plateau United.
Barau will welcome Abia Warriors to the Sani Abacha Stadium, where they have already established a strong early record.
However, Abia Warriors will not arrive without confidence. They defeated Sporting Lagos 2-0 in Lagos at the weekend and will be looking to build on that result.
The fixture therefore presents Barau with another test of their unbeaten run and early title ambitions.
Kano Pillars have also made an impressive start, particularly in attack.
The former champions have scored nine goals in their first three matches, the highest tally recorded by any team at this stage of the campaign.
They will face Inter Lagos in a first-ever top-flight meeting between the two clubs.
Pillars will enter the fixture full of confidence after their emphatic 4-1 victory over Doma United, which ended the leaders’ perfect start.
Inter Lagos, however, have their own reason to believe. They stunned Enyimba 1-0 in Aba on Matchday 4 and will hope that result can provide the platform for another strong performance.
The meeting promises to be an interesting battle between Kano Pillars’ attacking strength and an Inter Lagos side gaining confidence.
Doma United remain top of the table despite their heavy 4-1 defeat to Kano Pillars.
The Gombe club had won their first three matches without conceding before Sunday’s defeat brought their perfect start to an end.
They now face Plateau United at the Pantami Stadium, with a quick response needed to protect their position at the summit.
Plateau United will be hoping to make the trip count after their own 3-1 victory over Shooting Stars on Matchday 4.
Defending champions Rangers International will also be looking for another three points when they host Ranchers Bees.
The Enugu club have won their last two matches and will be aiming for a third consecutive victory as they continue their title defence.
Ranchers Bees, however, possess one of the league’s most dangerous attacking players in Mohammed Rabiu Zulkifilu.
The midfielder has already scored five goals in three appearances and will be a major threat to Rangers.
Elsewhere, Bendel Insurance will host unbeaten Ikorodu City, while Kwara United welcome Nasarawa United.
Niger Tornadoes will face Warri Wolves in Minna, while Shooting Stars take on Katsina United at the Lekan Salami Stadium.
The Matchday 5 programme will conclude on Thursday when Rivers United host Kun Khalifat FC, with only four rounds completed, the NPFL table is already beginning to produce interesting storylines.
For Enyimba, the immediate target is simple: get their first point and begin climbing away from the bottom.
For Barau FC and Kano Pillars, the opportunity is different. Both Kano clubs will be looking to maintain their strong starts and put pressure on Doma United at the top.
The midweek fixtures could therefore bring another major shift in the early NPFL standings.
