Nigeria international Semi Ajayi delivered a standout performance as Hull City marked their Premier League return with a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

Ajayi was named Man of the Match after producing a commanding display at the heart of Hull City’s defence and scoring the opening goal to help the newly promoted side secure a memorable three points.

The Super Eagles defender gave Hull the lead in the 17th minute, reacting quickest to a rebound after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had saved Oli McBurnie’s header from a corner.

Ajayi kept his composure to fire the loose ball into the net, sparking celebrations and writing his name into Hull’s history as the club scored their first Premier League goal in nine years.

Hull doubled their advantage seven minutes before half-time through Nobel Mendy, putting the hosts in a commanding position against Michael Carrick’s Manchester United.

Ajayi remained composed and authoritative throughout the second half, helping Hull City withstand United’s pressure and preserve a historic clean sheet on their return to England’s top flight.

Reflecting on his performance and Hull’s impressive start, Ajayi credited his teammates for their attacking intent and said the early breakthrough gave the team greater belief.

“It was amazing. It kind of capped off the really good start that we had. We had a couple of chances before that which we didn’t manage to put away, but obviously that one got us into the lead, and also gave us something to protect, but also build on,” Ajayi told TNT Sports.

The victory gives Hull City a perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season, while Ajayi’s goal and Man of the Match award provide a memorable beginning to his campaign.

For the Nigeria international, it was a performance that combined defensive leadership, composure and attacking impact — and one that could prove significant as Hull City begin their battle to establish themselves back in the Premier League.
