ABS Ilorin Football Club have appointed experienced coach Festus Allen as their new Technical Adviser ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Allen was unveiled on Wednesday at the Taiwo Awoniyi Media Centre, George Innih Stadium, Ilorin, after signing a one-year contract with an option for an extension.
The appointment represents a return to familiar territory for Allen, who has a strong history with the Ilorin-based club and was previously part of the technical team that delivered one of the most significant achievements in its history.
Allen was a member of Coach Patrick Awaja’s technical crew that guided ABS Ilorin FC to the top of the Nigeria National League (NNL), earning the club its historic first promotion to the Nigerian Premier League.
After Awaja’s departure, Allen took charge of the team, further strengthening his connection with the club.
Speaking after his unveiling, Allen described his return as an emotional one and acknowledged the role ABS Ilorin FC played in his development and recognition as a coach in Nigerian football.
However, the experienced tactician quickly shifted attention to the task ahead, making it clear that the club’s ultimate objective is a return to the top flight.
“The ultimate is the Premier League. But it cannot be done by one person. It is a collective effort.”
Allen called for unity among the club’s management, players, supporters and other stakeholders, stressing that everyone must contribute to the promotion push.
“We have to come together as one to work towards that. Like I said, the ultimate is the Premier League.”
Experience and development
Director of Football, Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka, welcomed Allen’s return, describing him as a seasoned coach who already understands the club and its football philosophy.
Chukwuemeka also reaffirmed ABS Ilorin FC’s commitment to developing young players while competing at the highest level possible.
The club has established a reputation for nurturing emerging talents, with Chukwuemeka revealing that more than 253 players have graduated from the ABS FC structure and gone on to play for clubs in Nigeria and abroad.
The club believes Allen’s experience and familiarity with its system can help bridge the gap between youth development and competitive success as the team prepares for the new campaign.
NPFL promotion the target
ABS Ilorin FC are now preparing for the 2026/27 season with promotion firmly in their sights.
Players are expected to resume on August 28, while full training is scheduled to begin on August 31.
The club also appealed to football supporters, stakeholders and partners within the Kwara football community to rally behind the team as it begins its campaign.
ABS Ilorin FC further expressed appreciation to Proprietor His Excellency Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki for his continued commitment to the club.
Saraki’s sustained support has helped ABS Ilorin FC remain an important platform for developing young footballers in Kwara State and providing them with opportunities to pursue professional careers.
With Allen now back at the helm, ABS Ilorin FC will hope his experience, knowledge of the club and previous connection with its success can help guide the team towards another historic achievement a return to Nigeria’s top flight.
