Fulham are closing in on the signing of Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu from Turkish side Trabzonspor as they move swiftly to reinforce their defence following the departure of Issa Diop to newly promoted Premier League club Ipswich Town.
The Cottagers confirmed Diop’s exit on Wednesday, with the Moroccan international completing a reported £8.5 million move after making 96 appearances for the West London club since joining from West Ham United in 2022. His departure has left a significant gap in Fulham’s backline, prompting the club to accelerate its pursuit of a replacement.
Nwaiwu has emerged as Fulham’s top defensive target, with negotiations between the two clubs now at an advanced stage. Reports suggest Fulham have improved their offer to €27 million upfront plus €3 million in performance-related bonuses, although Trabzonspor are believed to be holding out for a fee exceeding €35 million.
The 22-year-old Super Eagles international has reportedly already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract, paving the way for a move to Craven Cottage once the clubs reach a final agreement.
Since joining Trabzonspor earlier this year from Austrian outfit Wolfsberger AC, Nwaiwu has enjoyed a rapid rise, establishing himself as one of the Turkish club’s standout performers. The commanding centre-back has scored three goals in 16 league appearances, while his impressive displays also earned him his maiden call-up to Nigeria’s senior national team.
Should the deal be completed, Nwaiwu would reunite with fellow Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey, giving Fulham a youthful Nigerian partnership at the heart of their defence. The club views the versatile defender as a long-term investment capable of strengthening their defensive unit ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Trabzonspor are also expected to retain a 15% sell-on clause, reflecting their confidence in the defender’s future value.
For Fulham, the pursuit of Nwaiwu highlights the club’s intent to strengthen key areas early in the transfer window following Diop’s departure. With negotiations entering their final stages, both clubs are expected to continue talks in an effort to reach an agreement before pre-season preparations gather momentum.
