Flying Eagles head coach Abdul Maikaba has expressed satisfaction with the steady progress of Nigeria’s U-20 national team, while insisting there is still significant room for improvement as preparations intensify for the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire.

The seven-time African champions have continued their training programme with encouraging displays in camp, giving the technical crew confidence that the squad is gradually developing into a competitive unit capable of challenging for honours in the regional competition.

Speaking after assessing his players’ performances, Maikaba commended the team’s commitment, discipline, and willingness to embrace the demands of international football. However, he emphasized that the current performances are only a foundation for what he expects from the Flying Eagles when the tournament begins.

“I am satisfied with the progress the boys have made since we started our preparations. They have shown commitment, discipline, and a strong desire to improve every day. The response from the players has been very encouraging, and that gives us confidence as a technical crew,” Maikaba said.

The experienced tactician, who has enjoyed success at both club and national team levels, believes the squad possesses enormous potential but warned that talent alone will not be enough against some of West Africa’s strongest youth teams.

“We are not where we want to be yet. There is still a lot of work ahead of us because the WAFU B Championship is always highly competitive. Every country will arrive with quality players and a determination to qualify, so we must continue raising our standards in every aspect of our game.”

Maikaba explained that the coaching staff remains focused on improving the team’s tactical organisation, attacking efficiency, defensive discipline, physical conditioning, and mental strength to ensure the Flying Eagles are fully prepared for the demands of tournament football.

“Football at this level is decided by small details. We are working on our tactical discipline, our decision-making in key moments, our fitness levels, and our understanding as a team. Improvement is a continuous process, and I expect every player to remain focused and committed throughout this journey.”

The coach also challenged his players to maintain their hunger and humility, stressing that competition for places in the final squad remains open.

“Nobody should feel comfortable. Every player must continue to earn his place through hard work, consistency, and dedication. Representing Nigeria is a privilege, and wearing the Flying Eagles jersey comes with great responsibility. I want every player to understand what it means to play for this country.”

With the WAFU B U-20 Championship serving as an important pathway to continental success, Maikaba believes the ongoing preparations will provide the platform for the Flying Eagles to compete at the highest level.

“Our objective is clear, to build a team that Nigerians will be proud of. We want to arrive in Côte d’Ivoire fully prepared, compete with confidence, and achieve our qualification target. The players understand our expectations, and I believe they have the quality to keep improving if they remain committed to the process.”

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will continue their intensive training programme in the coming weeks as preparations gather momentum for the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire, where the team will be aiming to reaffirm its status as one of Africa’s leading youth football nations and secure qualification for the next continental championship.
