Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has thrown down the gauntlet to Maduka Okoye and Stanley Nwabali after openly declaring his ambition to become Nigeria’s long-term number one ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper, whose international switch to Nigeria was officially approved by FIFA earlier this year, is now in line to make his long-awaited debut for the Super Eagles later this month.
Okonkwo’s comments arrive at a crucial moment for Nigeria’s goalkeeping department, with competition for the starting spot becoming increasingly intense.
Despite finishing the season strongly with Wrexham, Okonkwo was surprisingly left on the bench for the club’s final five Championship matches, as manager Phil Parkinson opted for experienced goalkeeper Danny Ward during the Red Dragons’ late push for a playoff place.
However, the former Arsenal academy graduate remains fully focused on his international future and made no secret of his desire to establish himself as Nigeria’s trusted first-choice goalkeeper.
“It’s an honour to even get the opportunity to play for your country. I’m so excited; I can’t wait,” Okonkwo said in a recent interview.
“I’ve been wanting this moment for quite a while now, and to have this opportunity is incredible.
“I want to become a consistent performer for the country. I want to be someone they can trust in goal for every game.
“The process starts with integrating into the team, learning the way we play, building connections with my defenders, attackers, and everyone around me. I know it’s a process, but I want to build that trust.”
His statement will undoubtedly increase the pressure on current Super Eagles goalkeepers Maduka Okoye and Stanley Nwabali, both of whom are also battling to secure the number one jersey ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures.
Okoye, who endured a difficult start to the season with Udinese, recently received glowing praise from head coach Kosta Runjaic for the way he has rebuilt his confidence and matured in Italy.
“I’m very happy with the levels with which he’s expressing himself,” Runjaic said.
“It’s not easy to prepare without playing regularly, but he has worked a lot on himself. He’s doing very well and has to keep it that way.”
Meanwhile, Nwabali’s current club uncertainty has further opened the race for the Super Eagles’ starting role, creating an opportunity for any goalkeeper who impresses during Nigeria’s upcoming matches.
Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleye were both handed opportunities during the March international break after Okoye suffered an injury against Iran, highlighting the fierce competition currently surrounding the position.
With the Unity Cup fast approaching, Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle now faces an increasingly difficult decision as several goalkeepers push to stake their claim for the coveted number one shirt.
