Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has shed light on the deeply personal decision that led him to represent Nigeria instead of England at the international level.
Born in Southwark, London, to Nigerian parents, Aina progressed through England’s youth ranks, featuring prominently from the U16 to U20 levels and earning over 20 caps along the way.
The former Chelsea FC academy product was widely regarded as a promising prospect for the Three Lions, even receiving a call-up to the U21 squad in 2015.
However, a turning point arrived in March 2017 when Aina trained with Nigeria’s senior team in London.
That experience, combined with a strong connection to his roots, ultimately shaped his international future.
“Born and raised in London, I chose to play for Nigeria,” Aina revealed in an interview with Nottingham Forest’s media team.
“It was simply a decision I made when I was around 20. That’s where my parents are from; that’s my heritage.”
He added: “The opportunity presented itself, and I believed it was the right one at that moment, so I embraced it wholeheartedly.”
For Aina, the decision goes beyond football; it is a source of pride for his entire family.
“My family is extremely proud of me, particularly when I wear the Super Eagles shirt,” he said. “They cherish it even more than I do. For me, it’s a privilege; it’s an honor.”
Since committing to Nigeria, Aina has grown into a key figure for the Super Eagles, delivering consistent performances on the international stage.
His influence was particularly evident during Nigeria’s impressive run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he earned a place in the tournament’s Best XI.
Now a cornerstone of the national team, Aina’s journey reflects a powerful blend of identity, opportunity, and pride, one that continues to resonate with fans across both nations.
