The Super Eagles of Nigeria will head into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as one of the continent’s elite forces, according to the final FIFA World Rankings released on Monday.
Despite a period of international dormancy, Nigeria maintained its global standing at 38th, solidifying its position as the fifth-highest-ranked team in Africa. This ranking places the three-time African champions ahead of several continental heavyweights, including South Africa, Cameroon, Tunisia, and DR Congo.
The December update confirms Morocco (11th) remains the team to beat on the continent, followed by Senegal (19th), Algeria (34th), and Egypt (35th). Nigeria rounds out the top five, providing a psychological boost for Eric Chelle’s side as they begin their campaign in Morocco.
The rankings also highlight a growing gap between the Super Eagles and long-time rivals Ghana and South Africa, both of whom trail Nigeria in the latest standings.
Global Landscape: Spain Finishes on Top
On the world stage, Spain concludes 2024 as the No. 1 ranked nation, edging out reigning world champions Argentina. The global top five is completed by France (3rd), England (4th), and Brazil (5th).

The current standings serve as a baseline for the upcoming tournament. With the next FIFA update scheduled for January 19—just 24 hours after the AFCON final—the Super Eagles have a significant opportunity to climb the ladder. Success in Morocco could see Nigeria break back into the global top 30 and potentially leapfrog North African rivals Egypt and Algeria.
Nigeria’s performance in Group C will be the first test of their “top five” status as they hunt for a fourth continental crown.
