Fulham defender and Super Eagles regular Calvin Bassey has revealed that his journey to professional football came dangerously close to ending before it even began.
The 25-year-old admitted that as a teenager, he reached a point where he was prepared to abandon his dream entirely if things didn’t change quickly.
“I remember being 15 and going into my final year, and I told myself that if I didn’t get a professional club, I would quit football. It was that simple,” Bassey shared in a candid reflection.
“I would just stop pursuing it seriously and play only for fun. Thank God I eventually got a club, because I honestly don’t know where I would be otherwise.”
A Make-or-Break Year
That pivotal year became the turning point of Bassey’s life. After a successful trial, he earned a spot in Leicester City’s academy, a breakthrough that set the foundation for a remarkable career journey across Europe.
The defender has since played for Rangers, Ajax, and now Fulham, where he has become a dependable Premier League performer. His rise also earned him a prominent role with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Looking back, Bassey says the pressure he placed on himself helped sharpen his focus and determination.
“That moment was good for me. It felt like a make-or-break point, so I had to give everything I had,” he said.
“I would have been at peace with myself either way, because at least I promised myself that I would give it everything, and if it didn’t work out, then so be it.”
A Career He Almost Never Had
Now firmly established in the Premier League and on the international stage, Bassey described his current status as “truly a blessing,” especially given how close he came to walking away from football completely.
From nearly quitting at 15 to becoming one of Nigeria’s most reliable defenders, Bassey’s story stands as a powerful reminder of resilience, purpose, and the thin line between giving up and breaking through.
