The Super Eagles coaching staff are reportedly keeping a close eye on FC Alverca defender Isaac James as Nigeria searches for a replacement for injured Porto left-back Zaidu Sanusi ahead of the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The 22-year-old James has emerged as a potential candidate for a first senior international call-up after impressing in Portugal, while Sanusi’s latest injury is expected to rule him out of Nigeria’s September fixtures.
Sanusi Facing Two-Month Layoff
Sanusi suffered an adductor injury to his right leg during Porto’s 3-0 league victory over Académico de Viseu on Saturday.
The experienced defender was forced off in the 17th minute after attempting a pass, with subsequent medical examinations confirming the extent of the injury.
Sanusi is expected to spend approximately two months on the sidelines, making his availability for the next international window highly unlikely.
His absence represents a significant blow for both Porto and Nigeria, given his experience and established role at left-back.
Isaac James Enters the Picture
With Sanusi unavailable, attention has reportedly turned towards James, who has been making steady progress with Portuguese side Alverca.
Born in Okpo, Nigeria, on August 28, 2004, the left-footed defender joined Alverca on a free transfer from French club Lorient in July 2025.
James had previously played a role in Lorient’s promotion-winning campaign, helping the club secure a return to Ligue 1 before making the move to Portugal.
Since arriving at Alverca, he has established himself as a regular in the Primeira Liga, catching the eye with his defensive discipline, quality crossing, and willingness to contribute in the attacking third.
Chelle Keeping Close Watch
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is understood to have been monitoring James since last season.
Reports indicate that members of the Nigerian coaching and scouting staff have watched the youngster on several occasions this campaign, with their assessments reportedly proving positive.
James’ emergence could provide Chelle with another option at a position where Nigeria currently has limited natural depth.
However, the youngster faces competition from more established players.
Competition for Left-Back Spot
Bruno Onyemaechi remains one of the leading options to start at left-back in Sanusi’s absence.
Nigeria also have versatile defenders such as Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel, both of whom are primarily right-sided players but have previously operated on the opposite flank when required.
James, meanwhile, offers the advantage of being a naturally left-footed defender who is comfortable playing from the left side.
A continued run of strong performances for Alverca could therefore strengthen his case for a place in Chelle’s squad.
Opportunity Knocks for James
Sanusi’s injury could ultimately create a major opportunity for the young defender.
A first senior call-up would represent another significant step in James’ rapidly developing career and give Chelle the chance to assess him within the Super Eagles environment.
