Nigeria’s Super Falcons did more than secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with their commanding 6-2 victory over Egypt they also boosted their earnings by over ₦40 million thanks to a special performance incentive.
The defending African champions produced one of their most convincing displays of the tournament, scoring six goals against Egypt to finish the group stage on a high. Beyond the result, the emphatic win also came with a significant financial reward under the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) goal bonus initiative.
Ahead of WAFCON 2026, the National Sports Commission introduced a performance-based reward system designed to motivate the Super Falcons throughout the competition.
Under the incentive package, the team receives $5,000 for every goal scored during the group stage, by hitting Egypt for six goals, Nigeria earned $30,000 from that match alone an amount worth more than ₦40 million at the current exchange rate.
It was a fitting reward for a clinical attacking performance that reminded the rest of Africa why the Super Falcons remain the continent’s most successful women’s national team.
The victory over Egypt capped an eventful group-stage campaign for the Super Falcons, Nigeria began the tournament with a disappointing defeat to Malawi before bouncing back with a narrow victory over Zambia. The six-goal demolition of Egypt ensured the team finished the group stage with nine goals in total.
Those goals came from:
- Two goals against Malawi
- One goal against Zambia
- Six goals against Egypt
With nine goals scored, Nigeria accumulated a total group-stage goal bonus of $45,000, further increasing the financial rewards available to the squad.
While the goal bonus has already provided a welcome financial boost, even greater rewards remain available as the tournament progresses.
Having secured qualification for the quarter-finals, the Super Falcons are still in contention for the WAFCON title, with additional prize money and performance incentives expected if they continue advancing in Morocco.
The comprehensive victory over Egypt also restored confidence within the squad after an inconsistent start to the tournament.
Head coach Justine Madugu will now be hoping his players can maintain their attacking form while tightening up defensively as they prepare for the knockout rounds.
The Super Falcons have once again demonstrated their ability to rise when the pressure is highest.
Experienced stars including Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade led from the front against Egypt, while the team’s attacking movement and clinical finishing produced one of the standout performances of WAFCON 2026 so far.
