In a decisive move to bolster Nigeria’s standing on the global weightlifting stage, the Federal Government, acting through the National Sports Commission (NSC), has officially released dedicated training grants for five of the nation’s most promising athletes.
The announcement, made by Ibrahim Aladi Abdul, President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), marks a significant milestone in the country’s preparation for a grueling international calendar that culminates in the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The grants target a select group of athletes recognized for their consistency, strength, and podium potential. These five weightlifters represent the spearhead of Nigeria’s quest for gold:
Rafiatu Folashade Lawal: A powerhouse and a proven champion in the continental circuit.
Edidiong Umoafia: Known for his explosive technique and reliability under pressure.
Onome Didih: A rising star who has already secured her ticket to the big stage.
Sarah Matthew: One of the early qualifiers with eyes set on a podium finish.
Joy Benedict: A key prospect identified for long-term development leading into the 2028 Olympic cycle.
While the grants are a welcome boost, the work on the platform is just beginning. The NWF has confirmed that it is intensifying its training camp for the African Senior Weightlifting Championship, scheduled to take place this May in Ismaili, Egypt.

This championship isn’t just about continental titles; it is the final qualification event for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland,”These grants are not just financial support; they are a statement of intent. Our goal is to ensure our athletes have everything they need to dominate on the world stage,” noted NWF President Ibrahim Aladi Abdul.
The upcoming championship in Egypt presents a critical opportunity for Nigeria to expand this roster. The Federation aims to use the Ismaili event to qualify additional athletes, maximizing the country’s chances of hauling in a record number of medals in July and looking toward Los Angeles 2028.
Beyond the immediate horizon of Scotland, these grants signify a shift toward long-term athlete development. By supporting these five specific Weightlifters, the NSC and NWF are laying the groundwork for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, ensuring that Nigeria’s momentum doesn’t stall after the Commonwealth cycle.
