Former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been released from the hospital following a devastating car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.
Joshua, 36, was traveling on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu when the black Lexus he was in collided with a truck, resulting in the tragic deaths of his friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.
Both victims were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Despite the severity of the incident, Joshua sustained only minor injuries.
He was discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve and is now recovering at his home in Nigeria.
A statement released by authorities in Lagos and Ogun states confirmed that Joshua was deemed fit enough to recuperate at home, though deeply affected by the loss of his friends.
In a show of respect, Joshua visited the funeral home where Ghami and Ayodele’s bodies were being held on Wednesday.
Their remains are expected to be flown back to the UK for final arrangements.
A statement shared on social media by the authorities read, “Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon, though heavy-hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends.
He was deemed fit enough to recuperate from home.”
The crash, which occurred on December 30, shocked both boxing fans and the public alike, as Joshua is known not only for his athletic prowess but also his charitable work.
The boxing world has rallied around him in this difficult time, with many sending their condolences following the tragic event.
Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, is currently focusing on his recovery as he deals with the emotional toll of the crash.
