Semi Ajayi: Super Eagles Must Share Goal-Scoring Responsibility

2 Min Read

Semi Ajayi has insisted that Nigeria cannot depend solely on their forwards for goals after delivering a Man of the Match performance in the Super Eagles’ 2–1 victory over Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The centre-back was outstanding at both ends of the pitch in Tuesday’s Group C opener, scoring Nigeria’s first goal and marshalling the defence as the Super Eagles made a winning start to their AFCON campaign.

Ajayi broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, rising above his marker to meet Alex Iwobi’s corner and power a header into the far corner. Remarkably, it was his only attempt of the match, but it proved crucial in setting the tone for Nigeria’s victory.

What Ajayi said

Speaking after the game, the 31-year-old described the moment as a special one, underlining the pride that comes with scoring for the national team.

“It is an amazing feeling. It is always special to score for your country, especially in a game like this where it helped us get off to a really good start. I was very pleased,” Ajayi said.

He went on to emphasize the importance of collective contribution, noting that Nigeria’s success depends on input from every department.

“It shows that we are one team. We cannot rely only on the attackers to score goals. Defenders and midfielders also have to chip in if we want to do well in the tournament,” he added.

Beyond his goal, Ajayi’s defensive display was equally impressive. He registered five tackles, two interceptions, and two clearances, blocked one shot, and completed four recoveries, underlining his value as Nigeria look to build momentum in Group C.
