Semi Ajayi produced a commanding, man-of-the-match performance on Saturday as Hull City overturned a 1–0 deficit to defeat Stoke City 2–1 in a gritty Championship encounter.
The Nigerian defender not only scored his first goal of the season but also led from the back with a dominant all-round display that inspired the Tigers’ second-half resurgence.
Ajayi Sparks Hull’s Fightback
Stoke started brighter and took the lead in the 17th minute through Sorba Thomas, leaving Hull struggling to find rhythm in a sluggish first half. But the Tigers returned after the break transformed, with Ajayi at the heart of the turnaround.
Barely three minutes into the second half, the center-back climbed highest from a set piece and powered home a header in the 48th minute to pull Hull level. The equaliser shifted the momentum instantly, energising Liam Rosenior’s side.
Hull completed the comeback moments later when Joe Gelhardt struck to put the visitors ahead, sealing all three points in a hard-fought encounter.

A Man-of-the-Match Masterclass
Ajayi was immense throughout. Beyond the goal, the Nigerian delivered one of his most complete performances since joining Hull City:
- 18 passes completed
- Six passes into the final third
- Five clearances
- One interception
- Four ball recoveries
His defensive authority, calm distribution, and aerial dominance set the tone for Hull’s second-half resurgence. It was the display of a leader, a blend of composure, intelligence, and physical presence rightly earning him the man-of-the-match award.
The performance is even more encouraging given Ajayi’s recent injury setbacks. Recurring hamstring issues previously disrupted his momentum, but Saturday’s showing was a reminder of how influential he can be when close to full fitness.
Boost for Super Eagles Hopes
Ajayi’s resurgence comes at a crucial moment as he pushes for a place in Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. With competition for defensive spots fierce, the Hull defender knows consistent, high-level performances are essential.
If he stays fit, Ajayi’s blend of experience, aerial strength, and reliability makes him an invaluable option for both club and country.
Saturday’s masterclass felt like a statement: Semi Ajayi is back, and he’s ready to fight for his place.
