Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has made a bold declaration that Nigeria will not be mere participants at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, but contenders for the title.
The Chippa United shot-stopper, who is expected to retain his place as Eric Chelle’s first-choice goalkeeper, stated that the Super Eagles’ only goal is to bring the trophy home after finishing as runners-up in the last edition.
“Nigeria is a big nation,” Nwabali said in an interview with SuperSport Football.
“Going into a tournament like AFCON, which is one of the biggest in the world, the aim is to win.”
Nigeria has been drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, but Nwabali believes the team’s mindset and pedigree set them apart.
He also acknowledged the weight of expectation that comes with representing a footballing powerhouse like Nigeria.
“As a big nation, we are always expected to win and not just to participate, but football is unpredictable.
However, after making the final at the last edition, this year I believe we are going to win.”
The Super Eagles will begin their AFCON 2025 campaign against Tanzania on December 23 in Morocco.
