Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has once again urged corporate organizations within the state to bolster his administration’s efforts in sports development, with a special appeal to support Bayelsa Queens in their campaign at this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League.
The state-owned football club is currently in the final of the WAFU B Champions League qualifiers, set to face hosts ASEC Mimosas in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Friday.
Speaking on Wednesday during the state’s 172nd executive council meeting at Government House in Yenagoa, Governor Diri called on businesses and well-meaning individuals to emulate the corporate social responsibility shown by Premium Trust Bank, which previously donated a Coaster bus to Bayelsa Queens during the last edition of the Governor’s Prosperity Cup.
He praised the bank’s commitment to supporting sports and urged others to follow suit, emphasizing the importance of contributing to the growth of the state’s football talent. The governor also extended his congratulations to the Bayelsa Queens for their impressive performance in the ongoing championship and encouraged Bayelsans, as well as investors, to rally behind the team.
“We should keep Bayelsa Queens in our prayers, and whatever support you can offer, whether material or financial, should be given,” Diri stated. Businesses and oil companies operating in Bayelsa should step up and support our girls in any way they can.
Bayelsa Queens are no strangers to continental success, having won the WAFU B qualifiers in 2022 and finished third in the CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco the same year.
