The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially announced that the 2025 NWFL Championship will be held in Abia State, South-East Nigeria, from September 11 to 21, 2025.
The Championship, which serves as the second tier of women’s football in Nigeria, is the latest event on the NWFL’s calendar, following the successful staging of the 2024/25 NWFL Premiership Super 6 earlier this year in Ikenne.
Confirming the development on Monday, August 18, 2025, Chief Operating Officer of the NWFL, Modupe Shabi, revealed that 17 clubs have registered for this year’s edition and will be drawn into four groups ahead of kick-off.
“We want to assure all participating teams that the Championship will be conducted under the highest standards of fair play, with a level playing ground for everyone involved,” Shabi stated. “Our commitment is to ensure that the competition reflects the values of transparency, integrity, and sporting excellence.”
Teams are expected to arrive in Abia State on September 11, with official draws and pre-match meetings scheduled for September 12. Matchday One will begin on September 13, launching a week of intense fixtures that will run until September 21. Rest days have been built into the schedule to ensure proper recovery for players.
As the gateway to the topflight NWFL Premiership, the Championship offers four promotion slots. The winners of each group will automatically secure promotion to the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership season.
All matches will be played across two venues in Abia State: the Abiriba Stadium and the Umuahia Township Stadium.
Seventeen teams will compete for the coveted promotion places:
- Sunshine Queens FC
- Osun Babes FC
