President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has reaffirmed that the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will begin as scheduled on August 22, with no plans for a change.

Gusau made the declaration on Friday in Lafia while officially opening the NPFL 2025/26 pre-season seminar. He praised the alignment of the NPFL calendar with that of major European leagues, describing it as a step forward for Nigerian football.

“When we came on board, we had no choice but to opt for an abridged league. This paved the way for achieving uniformity, as our league ended in May last season. This season, too, we will start on August 22 as scheduled,” Gusau stated.

The NFF President commended the efforts of the NPFL board, led by Chairman Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, for elevating the status of the league and implementing globally recognized best practices. He called on all stakeholders to maintain their support for the board’s ongoing initiatives.

Earlier, Elegbeleye assured participants that the NPFL will continue working closely with stakeholders to improve the league and attract more sponsorship, adding that the board remains committed to sustaining the high standards established over the past two seasons.

Also in attendance was the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, representing Governor Abdullahi Sule, who expressed appreciation to the NPFL for hosting the seminar in the state and pledged continued support for football growth across Nigeria.
