A Day of Shocks at the Lagos International Badminton Classics

3 Min Read

The 8th Lagos International Badminton Classics delivered a thrilling second day of competition, marked by major upsets and intense matches. Held at the Teslim Balogun Indoor Sports Hall, the event saw 42 matches across four courts, as athletes from around the world vied for a spot in the next round. The Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) has been praised for its excellent hospitality and organization, creating a seamless experience for participants.

After a dominant performance on day one, India’s momentum was largely halted, particularly in the men’s singles category. While Kalagotla managed to advance with a 21-12, 21-18 win over Slovakia’s Drata, the rest of the Indian contingent struggled. Poland’s world-ranked 165, Kwinta, delivered a stunning upset, defeating India’s Walter 21-17, 22-20. The surprises continued as Indonesia’s P. Shujiwo knocked out India’s Negi 22-20, 21-17 to secure his place in the Round of 16.

The day also featured other impressive performances. Korea’s Park GE advanced to the quarterfinals by powering past the Philippines’ Sreejith Parol in the women’s singles Round of 16. In a gripping match, Japan’s M. Koja upset India’s fifth seed, Bharadwaj, with a 21-15, 21-19 victory. The day concluded with another tough loss for India as Indonesia’s world-ranked 342 Muhammad Yusuf, who had already pulled off a major upset on day one, defeated S. Dayanand 21-12, 21-15, capping a difficult day for the South Asian powerhouse.
