Former Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu is set to make a dramatic return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with Rivers United in advanced negotiations to sign the experienced midfielder ahead of the 2025–26 season.
The 37-year-old, who has enjoyed a successful career in Europe, could soon follow in the footsteps of other Nigerian stars like Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi, and Brown Ideye, who have returned to the NPFL in recent years. Sources close to the Pride of Rivers confirm that talks with Ogu are at an advanced stage, with a deal expected to be finalized in the coming days.
Ogu began his career at Akwa Starlets before moving to Akwa United and later Flying Sports Academy. His European breakthrough came in 2006 with Slovenian side Drava Ptuj, where he made 97 appearances and scored 8 goals.
The midfielder then went on to play in Portugal, Spain, and Israel, where he became a fan favorite at Hapoel Be’er Sheva, winning multiple league titles and earning a reputation as a technically sound and versatile midfielder.
Ogu earned his first Super Eagles call-up in 2013 and made his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Kenya, replacing the injured Victor Moses. Over his international career, he earned 26 caps, scoring once, and featured in several major tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
If the deal is completed, Ogu’s experience, leadership, and technical ability will be a major boost for Rivers United, who are aiming for continental success. His presence could also inspire younger players in the NPFL, further raising the league’s profile.
With Nigerian football attracting more high-profile returnees, Ogu’s potential move could be another step in the NPFL’s growing appeal to veteran stars.
