Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has praised the tenacity of Bayelsa Queens after emerging champions of the 2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).
The team clinched the female league title for a record sixth time, dethroning defending champions, Edo Queens, in Ikenne, Ogun State.
Governor Diri, who was represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, in a get-together put together by the State Government to honour the victorious team, described Bayelsa Queens as worthy champions.
He said that as a government, they are very proud of the Prosperity Girls’ achievement.
The Deputy Governor, who stood in for the Governor, said the team has shown that with hard work, focus, and determination, it could surmount challenges.
“I particularly salute the resilience of our girls in maintaining an unbeaten run throughout the regular season, and the victory is a fitting reward for their effort, and we are indeed proud of them”, Governor Diri said.
He commends the Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, the Chairman, and the board members, Coach Ogbonda Whyte, and the technical crew, as well as the players, for a job well done.
The Governor urged the team not to rest on their oars as they prepare for another attempt to conquer the zone and the continent.
Bayelsa Queens picked the ticket to represent Nigeria in the 2025 CAF Women Champions League three years after it first did in the 2022 edition in Morocco, where it came third after winning the WAFU B zonal qualifiers in Cote d’Ivoire.
Hon. Daniel Igali, Commissioner for Sports Development, in his message to the team, charged the girls to remain focused on the assignment ahead and to be good ambassadors as they represent Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
Chairman of Bayelsa Queens, Pastor Robin Angonimi Apreala, expressed gratitude to the Prosperity Government for the show of love and encouragement given to the team and promised not to let the confidence repose on the team down.
Pastor Apreala said he appreciates the leadership style of Governor Douye Diri and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, since they have been at the helm of affairs in the state.
