The Super Eagles forward, Victor Boniface, has dropped a message on his Instagram handle following his poor performance in the match against Russia, indicating his potential exit from the national team.
“Proud to play for my country, and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment, the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot,” he said.
“I don hang boot” in Nigerian parlance means “I have hung boot,” which typifies retirement.
On the occasion of his 13th international cap, Boniface struggled to make an impact as Nigeria came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Russia.
Toluwase Arokodare, who substituted Boniface in the 61st minute, made a startling and opportune equaliser to stall Russia’s close victory. The substitution was necessitated by the latter’s inability to exert sway over the game.
The Bayern Leverkusen forward’s soaring mediocre performance has left much to be desired, raising questions about his eligibility and future with the Super Eagles.
The absence of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman gave Boniface a start opportunity, but he failed to impressively endear himself to Nigerians by not netting a goal, which has caused him frustration.
His intended resolve to quit the national team has triggered rife discourse among fans and football pundits about his future with the Super Eagles.
But just when Nigerians were about to take his retirement announcement seriously, the striker took his post down and made a meme indicating that his earlier post was a joke.
