The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has paid a heartfelt visit to the family of late football legend Christian Chukwu, pledging full support and participation in the burial of the former Green Eagles captain and Super Eagles coach.
Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” passed away on April 12 at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy etched deep in the annals of Nigerian football history. The former defender captained Nigeria to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 and later managed the national team during the early 2000s.
Led by NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, the delegation included top football officials such as NFF 1st Vice President Felix Anyansi-Agwu, who delivered the federation’s message of condolence and commitment to honouring the late icon.
Speaking on behalf of the NFF President, Anyansi-Agwu described Chukwu as “a patriotic and dedicated football icon who served Nigeria wholeheartedly, both as a player and coach.”
“The late Chukwu gave his all for the country. He is a hero even in death. One thing is clear: Christian Chukwu can never be forgotten, considering his service and achievements for Nigeria,” he said.
Gusau emphasized that the federation was not only there to console the family but also to align on burial arrangements, assuring the family of the NFF’s involvement in ensuring a befitting farewell for the national hero.
“We want to be on the same page with the family and understand the plans they are putting in place. Chukwu is a hero, and the NFF will participate fully in his burial,” he added.
Responding on behalf of the family, Emeka Chukwu, son of the late captain, expressed gratitude for the federation’s gesture and assured that plans for the final burial rites would be communicated in due course.
“We are grateful for this visit and the support from the NFF and South-East football community. The details of the burial will be announced soon,” Emeka said.
The NFF delegation also included Executive Committee Member and Chairman of the Nigeria National League, Mr. George Aluo; Enugu State FA Chairman, Barrister Tony Ugwu; Imo State FA Chairman, Barrister Ifeanyi Dike; and Anambra State FA Chairman, Mr. Chikelue Iloenyosi.
Christian Chukwu’s contributions to Nigerian football spanned decades from captaining Enugu Rangers to domestic glory, to leading the national team as both a player and coach. His influence went beyond the pitch, as he remained a mentor and inspiration for generations of players.
His passing has sparked tributes from across the football world, and preparations are underway to ensure he receives the honour worthy of a true Nigerian sporting legend.
