Veteran forward Ahmed Musa will return to the Super Eagles at the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London, marking a significant return to the national team. His club, Kano Pillars, confirmed the development via their official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, May 5.
“Captain Ahmed Musa is set to lead the Super Eagles at the Unity Cup 4-Nations Tourney from May 26–31, 2025, at Brentford Stadium, London,” the statement read. “Musa has been in top form for Sai Masu Gida, with 8 goals and 2 assists in the ongoing NPFL25. Congrats, Skippo!”
Musa, Nigeria’s most capped player with 110 appearances and 18 goals, will look to add to his illustrious international career. His return comes after his omission from recent World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. His impressive performance in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where he has netted eight goals and provided two assists, helped guarantee his comeback.
Kano Pillars’ Media and Communications Director, Isma’eel Abba Tangalashi, confirmed the invitation, stating, “I can confirm that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) sent Kano Pillars his invitation.”
The Unity Cup, a four-nation invitational tournament, will feature Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Super Eagles will face their long-standing rivals, the Black Stars of Ghana, in their opening match at the Gtech Community Stadium on Tuesday, May 27.
The tournament, last held in 2004, returns after a 21-year pause, and this edition aims to celebrate Afro-Caribbean football culture and provide a platform for teams to build chemistry ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle views the tournament as an opportunity to assess new talents and strategies. Club commitments may prevent several Europe-based players from participating, so Chelle believes Musa’s leadership and experience will be invaluable.
Chelle has been actively scouting talent in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL). He attended matches such as Ikorodu City’s clash with Plateau United in Lagos and Remo Stars’ encounter with Kwara United in Ikenne, identifying players with potential national team call-ups.
The coach emphasised the Unity Cup’s importance in integrating new players into the squad. “We are looking forward to taking part in the Unity Cup as it will give us the chance to try out a few new players in different roles, helping us to strengthen our squad before the matches in September and October,” Chelle stated.
The Unity Cup will conclude on May 31 with a final and a third-place playoff.
