ATHLETICS: Nigeria Sprint Star Favour Ofili Has switched Allegiance To Turkey

2 Min Read

The news of Favour Ofili switching allegiance to Turkey came as shock to Nigerians and was reported by Jamaican journalist kay Raynor, though no official confirmation yet from Favour Ofili or World Athletics.

According to the source from TV Jamaica News centre indicate that Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili has begun the process of transferring her international allegiance to Turkey, effective May 31, 2025.

Favour Ofili has informed the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) that her decision was driven by years of frustration with administrative failures by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN)—and not for financial reasons.

This marks the second time she has been affected by the federation mishandling her situation: In 2021, she missed the Tokyo Olympics 200m after the AFN failed to confirm her doping test requirements, affecting her and 12 other Nigerian athletes.

In 2024, despite meeting the Olympic qualifying standard for the women’s 100m, her name was reportedly not entered for the Paris Games.

She did go on to place 6th in the 200m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, representing Nigeria.

At just 22 years old, Ofili is one of Africa’s brightest sprinting prospects, with personal bests of 10.93s (100m) and 21.96s (200m).
